Die wissenschaftliche Zielsetzung des Netzwerks besteht darin, die Rolle der Empathie und insbesondere empathischer Emotionen beim Verstehen von Personen und Literatur aus philosophischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher und neuropsychologischer Perspektive zu untersuchen und so die Frage zu beantworten, ob bzw. inwiefern Personen- und Literaturverstehen Prozesse mit affektiven Komponenten sind. Das Netzwerk hat eine systematische Ausrichtung, die durch eine historische Schwerpunktsetzung ergänzt wird. Dieser historische Schwerpunkt richtet die im systematischen Fragen an Arbeiten der Einfühlungshermeneutik und -ästhetik des späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Das zentrale Anliegen ist dabei, wenig beachtete Theorien aufzuarbeiten und für die aktuelle systematische Debatte zugänglich und fruchtbar zu machen.

The goal of the network is to investigate the role of empathy, and of empathic emotions in particular, in understanding other persons and literature from the perspectives of philosophy, literary studies and neuropsychology. We aim further to answer the question of whether understanding other persons and literature are processes with affective components. In order to reach these goals, the network has a systematic orientation, supplemented by a historical focus. The historical analyses will pose these questions to treatises in the late 19th- and early 20th-century tradition of the hermeneutics and aesthetics of ‘Einfühlung’. In this way, largely neglected theoretical positions will be subject to new levels of systematic scrutiny and made available for current debates.
